About Book
This richly illustrated volume highlights the important yet largely unknown collections from the V&A of Indian subjects by Western artists. Spanning more than two centuries, Indian Life and Landscape, discusses the various categories of artists while placing them within the context of the history of Western Art. Masterpieces from other museums and institutions worldwide are included to enhance the story. Inspired by the Indian environment - its natural beauty, the exotic architecture and charm of the local people, these artists produced oil paintings, watercolours, drawings and prints for the public to enjoy. The lives of these artists in India are vividly portrayed in eight chapters and often enriched with quotations from their journals. This book accompanies an exhibition December 2008 - February 2009 hosted by the CSMVS, comprising around 125 treasures from both the V&A and the CSMVS. This pioneer exhibition, presented for the first time in India along with the book, has encouraged greater interest in this fascinating subject. The V&A exhibits have now been shown in several cities in India during 2009-10, as part of its "touring exhibition".
