About Book
The legendary Alice Boner embraced India as her home—not just physically but spiritually as well. She came to live in Banaras, Shiva’s city. Yet, the deity who held the central place of honor in her Banaras altar-room was not Shiva but Krishna. In this essay, we explore his impact on her life and creativity, especially as revealed in her own diaries. We then shift our focus and highlight her efforts to bring India and Europe into conversation with one another, especially through the museums she loved most dearly: Bharat Kala Bhavan in Banaras and the Rietberg Museum in Zurich. We see them interlock in a set of Krishna paintings fashioned in Udaipur around the beginning of the eighteenth century, where the legendary blind poet Surdas paints the scene. Two pages from this dispersed set now reside in Banaras; two are to be found in Zurich. How do they relate to and illumine the life of Alice Boner’s “Krishnaji”?
